South Seas Cultured Pearls

The legendary allure of South Sea pearls comes from their transparent luster and unique play of colors that imparts a luminescent beauty. These qualities define the finest nacre and make South Sea Pearls the most valuable of all pearls. The finest of these pearls have nacre measuring between 3.0mm and 6.0mm.

Colors

Color overtones range from white pink and silver pink to dark gold. Australian pearls can throw fancy colors including red gold — extremely rare and highly regarded. Ideal South Sea cultured pearl strands have a natural luster and color — no enhancements. This is the South Sea pearl quality you want.

How Extraordinary is a Matched Strand?

The meticulous matching required to create an extraordinary strand can take up to a decade. This process leaves no room for compromise.

AUSTRALIA

Australian oysters and ocean conditions are generally credited with producing the largest and finest quality pearls. From the 1800s, it was the primary source of the world’s largest and most valuable pearls. Aware that their pearls would be in high demand, Australia pioneered the South Sea cultured pearl industry, coaxing the sensitive Pinctada Maxima oyster to yield pearls — no easy feat.

LIFESTYLE OF THE FAMOUS PINCTADA MAXIMA

P. Maxima is the largest pearl oyster, and it is rare, unable to survive outside small remote areas of natural habitat. Culturing it is extremely difficult. Labor-intensive farms must be situated in the isolated locations that meet P. Maxima’s highly specific needs. Each oyster can grow only one pearl at a time and takes about two years. It can only be reseeded three to four times. Not every P. Maxima will produce a pearl. Most South Sea cultured pearls range from 10.0 to 15.0 mm taking two years to grow. Larger pearls up to 20mm take four to six years of growth. Australia protects its wild oyster stocks by strictly enforcing production quotas.

MORE ABOUT P. MAXIMA

This amazing oyster lives up to 40 years and can grow to 300mm in shell length. Impressed? Wait. Like many other saltwater oysters, it functions as both a male and a female during its life. It matures first as a male at 110mm to 120mm or three to four years. By 170mm half are females and by 190mm all are females.

WHERE ELSE ARE THEY CULTURED

Originally exclusive to Australia, South Sea pearls are cultured in Indonesia, Burma, and the Philippines, but the characteristics and quality of these pearls can vary greatly. Indonesia and Burma produce mainly white to yellow and also gold, while the Philippines produce mainly yellow and gold.

Get Ready to Roadtrip!

Whether you’re planning a big trip overseas, a meandering road trip in the mountains, or adventure at the beach, you may wonder about what jewelry to leave behind, what to bring and how to pack it.

Here are some useful travel jewelry tips we found.

A vacation is typically a break from routine and daily worries so most follow the rule of not bringing anything that you’ll worry about losing; and best to to leave expensive items or those with emotional value at home. However this doesn’t mean you should leave all jewelry at home since a vacation is a great time to wear fun outfits and accessorize.

A good tip is to stick with just a few neutral pieces — small hoop or stud earrings, a small pendant, a chain bracelet that will work with multiple outfits. But also throw in a few whimsical statement pieces. They’ll dress up even your most basic travel outfit.

What about your wedding band and engagement ring? Depending on your destination and activities, it’s often best to leave your engagement ring at home and wear just a less flashy wedding band.

Maybe you still want the look of your diamond engagement or wedding ring but don’t want to risk your own. Consider a look-a-like at a fraction of the cost. Colorless or “white” gems, like white topaz or crystal, can play the part of your pricier and more emotionally precious diamond jewelry.

If you do choose to travel with any fine jewelry, this is a good time to set up jewelry insurance for those pieces if you haven’t already.

How do you keep jewelry tangle-free, clean and organized to your destination?

Consider these tips for your next trip:

  • Travel jewelry case: If you travel frequently, it might make sense to invest in a travel organizer or roll made specifically for jewelry. It doesn’t have to be pricey, but a good travel jewelry case will have compartments to keep your individual jewelry items both organized and free from tangles and scratching.
  • Straws: Keep necklace chains tangle-free by slipping one end through a drinking straw then closing the clasp. Put all the straws in a toothbrush holder to keep your necklaces safe and contained. For a chunky necklace, follow the same process using a toilet paper tube.
  • Index cards: Keep earrings organized and easy-to-find by using a safety pin to poke holes through an index card then inserting earrings and sealing the backs. Wrap a cloth around the card then pack it with the rest of your jewelry.
  • Buttons: If you have spare buttons (especially larger ones), pair your earrings through the holes and seal the backs, one earring pair per button. When you’re packing for a trip, put the buttons you want to take in a small ziplock bag or wrap them in a small cloth for added protection.
  • Daily pill box: They are the perfect size for storing individual earrings, rings and even smaller bracelets and necklaces. By putting just one item (or earring pair) in a box, jewelry stays tangle-free and organized. And since the boxes are connected, you have all your jewelry in one place.
  • Small sealable snack cups: These are a great size for storing individual chunkier necklaces, bracelets or earrings, or a collection of earring-pair buttons wrapped in a small cloth.

If you’re flying, pack jewelry in your carry-on bag. Checked bags have a much greater chance of getting lost.

Just remember: You’re taking a vacation to relax and have fun, and to get away from your daily routine. Keep jewelry simple and inexpensive so it doesn’t get in the way.

Mine Your Own Diamonds and Get to Keep Them Too!

Big Diamond

We’ve been celebrating Diamonds all month at The Gold Market Jewelers as it is the birthstone for those lucky ones in April–and also since it’s bridal season too!

Here is some interesting information about Diamonds:

The only diamond mine in the world where you can be the miner is at The Arkansas Diamond Mine at Crater of Diamonds State Park. This Diamond Mine is located near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. For a small fee, you can enter the mine, search all day and keep any diamonds that you find. Just last year, a young Boy Scout found a 5 Carat diamond!

The diamonds at the Park occur in the soil and that makes them easy to look for. Some people find them after it rains by walking through the field looking for the bright reflection of the diamond that has been washed clean by the water.

More interesting facts:

• Crater Diamonds State Park is the only diamond mine in the U.S.

• Even though the U.S. is the largest consumer of diamonds, it has almost no production. The top 3 diamond mines in the world are Botswana, Russia and Canada, but fewer that 20 percent of diamonds mined worldwide are true-gem quality.

•Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on Earth.

• Most are between 1-2 billion years old.

• In ancient times, Diamonds were believed to promote strength, invincibility, courage and had power to ward off evil.

• The word “Diamond” is adopted from the Greek word “adamas” meaning “Invincible”.

• The value of a Diamond is based upon it Carat weight, Clarity, Color and quality of its Cut.

• They come in a wide range of colors including black, blue, green, pink, red, purple, orange and yellow. The color is dependent on the type of impurities that are present in the stone.  Yellow stones have minuscule traces of nitrogen while blue ones contain boron.
