Get Ready to Roadtrip!

Whether you’re planning a big trip overseas, a meandering road trip in the mountains, or adventure at the beach, you may wonder about what jewelry to leave behind, what to bring and how to pack it.

Here are some useful travel jewelry tips we found.

A vacation is typically a break from routine and daily worries so most follow the rule of not bringing anything that you’ll worry about losing; and best to to leave expensive items or those with emotional value at home. However this doesn’t mean you should leave all jewelry at home since a vacation is a great time to wear fun outfits and accessorize.

A good tip is to stick with just a few neutral pieces — small hoop or stud earrings, a small pendant, a chain bracelet that will work with multiple outfits. But also throw in a few whimsical statement pieces. They’ll dress up even your most basic travel outfit.

What about your wedding band and engagement ring? Depending on your destination and activities, it’s often best to leave your engagement ring at home and wear just a less flashy wedding band.

Maybe you still want the look of your diamond engagement or wedding ring but don’t want to risk your own. Consider a look-a-like at a fraction of the cost. Colorless or “white” gems, like white topaz or crystal, can play the part of your pricier and more emotionally precious diamond jewelry.

If you do choose to travel with any fine jewelry, this is a good time to set up jewelry insurance for those pieces if you haven’t already.

How do you keep jewelry tangle-free, clean and organized to your destination?

Consider these tips for your next trip:

  • Travel jewelry case: If you travel frequently, it might make sense to invest in a travel organizer or roll made specifically for jewelry. It doesn’t have to be pricey, but a good travel jewelry case will have compartments to keep your individual jewelry items both organized and free from tangles and scratching.
  • Straws: Keep necklace chains tangle-free by slipping one end through a drinking straw then closing the clasp. Put all the straws in a toothbrush holder to keep your necklaces safe and contained. For a chunky necklace, follow the same process using a toilet paper tube.
  • Index cards: Keep earrings organized and easy-to-find by using a safety pin to poke holes through an index card then inserting earrings and sealing the backs. Wrap a cloth around the card then pack it with the rest of your jewelry.
  • Buttons: If you have spare buttons (especially larger ones), pair your earrings through the holes and seal the backs, one earring pair per button. When you’re packing for a trip, put the buttons you want to take in a small ziplock bag or wrap them in a small cloth for added protection.
  • Daily pill box: They are the perfect size for storing individual earrings, rings and even smaller bracelets and necklaces. By putting just one item (or earring pair) in a box, jewelry stays tangle-free and organized. And since the boxes are connected, you have all your jewelry in one place.
  • Small sealable snack cups: These are a great size for storing individual chunkier necklaces, bracelets or earrings, or a collection of earring-pair buttons wrapped in a small cloth.

If you’re flying, pack jewelry in your carry-on bag. Checked bags have a much greater chance of getting lost.

Just remember: You’re taking a vacation to relax and have fun, and to get away from your daily routine. Keep jewelry simple and inexpensive so it doesn’t get in the way.

Earth Day should be Every Day

For 47 years, Earth Day has inspired individuals to renew their commitment to environmental protection. People around the world get together to celebrate nature, get educated on environmental issues and learn how to live greener lives. A good time for contemplation and for making some small but significant changes.

            Reinventing the old

One way to be “green,” that can include being eco-conscious is upcycling or repurposing your old jewelry.

“Upcycling” is  taking something old and creating something new out of it.

Give cherished family heirlooms new life

Upcycle jewelry for Earth Day by cleaning out your jewelry box and finding ways to revitalize your treasures. If you’re able to bring new life to an old piece of jewelry, you’ll feel good about doing something good for the Earth.

We all know what the basis of Recycling is: a practice that takes an item and targets it for reuse, returning it back to the cycle of daily contribution to society rather than discarding it to trash. Think plastic bottles turned into carpet, toys or fleece.

Upcycling is described as reusing a material without degrading the quality and composition of the material for its next use.  The possibilities are endless with redesigning jewelry. Engagement rings can be turned into pendant necklaces, as can brooches and watches. Necklaces can be formed into earrings, rings, bracelets etc.

Jewelry is meant to be worn, so reinventing an older, heirloom into a piece of new jewelry that reflects your taste makes it more likely that you’ll wear it, and is a great way to keep the memories of loved ones alive.

Even cost-conscious and environmentally friendly brides are even choosing upcycled wedding dresses, which use old dresses to create new ones or accessories. It’s a great way to treasure family heirlooms while incorporate your own personal style.

Here are a few tips and ideas to help breathe new life into an older piece of jewelry:

1. Wear it in a new way. Take an old chunky necklace and wrap it around your wrist instead and it becomes a bracelet. How about using a brooch as a hair ornament or pendant. Pierced or clip earrings, either single or a pair, can be attached to a jacket as a decorative accent.

2. Reimagine an old piece. If pieces that are too small, fragile, or damaged to be worn such as a dainty diamond watch that is too small for the wrist or a vintage diamond brooch, think about attaching to a wide gold cuff.

3. Turn a larger piece of jewelry into several smaller ones. The gems in a statement necklace can become earrings. Diamonds in a large cocktail ring or brooch could be used to make a pendant with matching earrings, etc.

4. Change the metal. A colorless diamond set in platinum or white gold band will make the diamond appear whiter and give the piece a contemporary feel.

5. Repurpose the gemstones in a new piece. Mount them in a new piece of your own desigm and create a piece of jewelry that will become an heirloom for future generations that still has ties to the past. You can also divide the gemstones among siblings and other loved ones, so everyone can share the memories, and create their own heirlooms.

If you decide to remove the gems from a piece, consider sending them to an independent laboratory like GIA for examination, before having them reset. A diamond grading report, or gemological report for colored stones, will document what the stone is, whether it is natural or synthetic and if there are any detectable treatments. This information is key for the appraiser to determine the stones’ value for appraisal and insurance purposes; In addition, knowing how the gems were treated will help the jeweler determine the best way to handle the stones during setting, repair and cleaning.

6. Make it fresh and wearable again. Sometimes all a piece of heirloom jewelry needs is a “tune up”. Bring in your vintage or antique treasure to make sure no gemstones are loose and to give it a proper cleaning. The piece may have a patina (oxidized film) that you may or may not want removed.

Even if you don’t own any heirloom jewelry, you can always acquire a piece that was preowned. Just follow these GIA tips for purchasing estate jewelry. These treasures can be restored or reimagined to create your own piece of history and become a memento to pass on to loved ones.

A watch that went to the MOON and back

Bulova made space history on August 2, 1971—during the Apollo 15 mission, a moon pilot chronograph, customized for lunar conditions by Bulova engineers, was worn on the moon.

The Bulova Wrist Chronograph was Commander Dave R. Scott’s personal timepiece on the 1971 Apollo 15 mission. It was the only personal watch (not owned by the government) that went to the moon.

Just recently, Dave Scott’s personal Bulova chronograph was auctioned and ended up selling for $1.62 million dollars!

Now Bulova makes history again with the special edition Moon Watch, updated with exclusive high performance quartz movement with a frequency of 262 kHz for unparalleled accuracy, continuing a history of precision timing.

Features include super-luminous hands and markers, anti-reflective sapphire glass, tachymeter and calendar all housed in a solid 316L surgical-grade stainless steel case in silver-tone with black dial.

The Dave Scott Bulova Re-Edition comes with two interchangeable straps, a textured black leather strap as well as a loop-and-hook, nylon NASA-style strap similar to the one found on Scott’s personal watch with nubuck leather patch that commemorates the date of mission (DOM) as 08021971.  A Gift-box presentation includes a Certificate of Authenticity.

Bulova made this one-off for lunar use when Scott became the seventh man to walk on the moon, and the first to drive the lunar rover.

For the first time ever, PANTONE, the world-renowned authority on color, unveiled not one, but two shades for its 2016 Fashion Color Report — and we love them both!

ROSE QUARTZ and SERENITY BLUE are Pantone Color(s) of the Year

“Colors this season transport us to a happier, sunnier place where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves.

-Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute™

Influenced by the world of art, new global doors opening and the desire to disconnect from technology and unwind, designers this season have gravitated toward a palette that is calming.

Other inspirations include “the contrast of urban design and lush vegetation, leading to unexpected color combinations and collections reminiscent of architecture, travel, and nostalgia.”

“With our culture still surrounded by so much uncertainty, we are continuing to yearn for those softer shades that offer a sense of calm and relaxation, both of which focus on a desire to breathe and reflect, then play.”

These 2016 colors are more about letting the softer side of you emerge.  Maybe the whole world needs to remember that strength is terrific, but softness is beautiful too.

Rose Quartz, is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. It feels very feminine, serene and focused. It would make for a beautiful pendant or statement ring.

As a gemstone, Rose Quartz helps keep us centered on our surroundings during the busy but free spirited spring and summer months.

Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space. Blue tends to bring a sense of comfort and tranquility to mind, and this transcendent version evokes feelings of strong connectedness within our space.

Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.
